All candidates are required to obtain 36 credits from the programme with research at the end of the successful completion. The research is base on classroom teaching improvement on action research. Programme duration is one academic year (2 semesters). Maximum period for completion of this programme is three years from the date of registration. The programme shall normally be a one year full-time. The number of credits to graduate is 36. All students shall take all courses. Thus the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) shall compromise 10 core courses and an additional compulsory teaching practice worth 6 credits (10 weeks – 50 days). The students must be spending their time 6 hrs per day at school during this teaching practical. (6 x 50 days = 300 notional hrs. ie 6C). Courses are offered during the week ends.
Eligibility for Admission
To study for this postgraduate diploma programme you must hold a bachelors degree from a recognized university or other recognized degree-awarding body, or a qualification at equivalent level. The content of this programme requires you to reflect on your own educational work experience; therefore, you will need to be employed in a teaching role currently, or have some experience of teaching in a post-compulsory education context or have regular access in a teaching capacity to an educational workplace or organization during your studies. We have flexible entry requirements that look at both your academic and work-based experience as well as your motivation to do the course.
You will be encouraged to relate the content of the teaching practices to your own experiences. Therefore, you will need access to an educational setting either through employment or other means such as volunteering and special arrangements for purposes of your study.
The selection procedure is through open advertisement and interview.
This course is treated as an independent unit for the purpose of attendance. A student shall attend a minimum of 80% of the total instruction hours in a theory course including tutorials and seminars in each semester. There shall be no provision for condonation of shortage of attendance and a student who fails to secure 80% attendance in a course shall be required to repeat that semester.

The performance of a student in each course will be evaluated in terms of percentage of marks Evaluation in each course shall be done through continuous comprehensive assessment (CCA) and end semester examination (ESE) which will be consolidated at the end of each semester. The evaluation system of the students shall have following two components Continuous Comprehensive Assessment (CCA) shall account for 30% of the final marks that a student will get in a particular course. The evaluation of students under CCA will be done on the basis of following parameters;

- Assignment 2
- Individual Presentation
All courses will be assessed by means of continuous comprehensive assessment (CCA) and final examination. Students shall be encouraged to visit schools and produce reports based on their observations and practical applications of the theoretical approaches they will have been provided with e.g. evaluation of curricula in practice or writing a report on a school’s Guidance and Counseling programme.
Formative Evaluation (CCA) – 30 marks
Summative Evaluation (ESE) – 70 marks
Note : Final Semester end Examination – Model of the question paper consists of 6 questions for 3 C subjects and students required to answer four questions out of six.
Based on the standard achieved under different components of the course students will be given the following grades:
Candidates who fail to obtain at least a grade of ‘C+’ in a particular component has to repeat the subject when it is offered next. A subject can be repeated only up to a maximum of three times. The final grade (Grade point average ‐ GPA) will be a weighted average of the number of credits of the subject and the grade point. The calculation of GPA will be based on the following formula

The pass grade of the course unit is C+. A candidate who possesses two C or a C- and D+ shall be awarded the degree subject to the special approval of the faculty board, Blue Sky Campus.
Calculation of Grade Point Average (GPA)
Grade point average will be calculated as the weighted average of grades obtained for the number of course credits. This aggregate index shall be called as Grade Point Average. It is computed as follows:

Teaching Practice (10 weeks – 50 days)
Teaching Practice is a compulsory component of the course. Students will be assigned to a few selected schools within the vicinity of the Blue Sky Campus. They are expected to teach 10 hours per week for 10 weeks under the guidance and supervision of two supervisors appointed by the faculty of Education. Demonstration lessons also carried out during the period of teaching practice under the guidance of the staff. They will be evaluated by two examiners. Students who failed to fulfill the teaching practice component within the given period of time shall complete within the next available time (Medical Certificate or relevant evidence must be provided). Workshops for evaluators will be held prior to teaching practice.
Note: 6 hours / day and totally the students 300 notional hours spend their time at school for their practices (50 notional hours is equal to one credit. So this subject is designed as 6 Credit).
Dissertation (Action Research Report)
Dissertation is a compulsory component of the course. 45 hours in research methodology will be provided during the first semester. Students have to submit a part-dissertation of 15000 to 20000 words based on a research conducted by them. Students have to score 50 marks or above for a pass.
If a candidate unable to sit the examination under medical grounds he/she should submit valid medical certificate and it would be accepted by the Higher Degree committee.
Effective Date of the Degree
The effective date of the degree is submission date of the dissertation to the examination branch or last dates of written examination whichever the latest.
PGDE Graduation Requirements
- Students must complete all program courses.
- To remain eligible for continuance in the PGDE and to be awarded the graduate degree, students must maintain progress toward completion of the program and may earn no grade lower than a C+ in any individual subject, and maintain a C+ average (2.3 GPA) for all courses completed in the program.
- Each student must complete a culminating research experience; this is an independent action research at classroom level project that integrates what he or she has learned during the research methods in education.
- Teaching Practice is a compulsory component of the course.
- Students must remain continuously enrolled while in the PGDE. program.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education is a general post-graduate diploma programme professional and research oriented post‐graduate programme in Education. To beat par with the professional requirement of the programme, the board of studies in education pooled the best expertise available in various are as to modify and improve the existing curriculum. The board formulated recently the this programme by diversifying the courses offered and strengthening the content and structure of the programme, in tune with the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education in Sri Lanka.
